Empowering Women

by Lorna Blake
(Toronto, Ontario Canada)

Do you look at your reflection in the mirror and feel sickened at the image staring back at you? Do you beat up on yourself? Are you constantly berating yourself to others?
It's time to turn the corner on self-hate or self-dislike.

Matthew Arnold a poet from the 1800's says: "Resolve to be thyself and know that he who finds himself loses his misery." Let me re-frame that. "Take time to know yourself. As you build a relationship with yourself you'll begin to like who you are."

Exercise to begin connecting with your inner self:

Ask yourself questions about your childhood likes and dislikes:

• What foods did you really like to eat as a child?

• What colours did you like to wear?

• What movies did you like to watch?

• What books did you like to read?

• What were your favourite childhood treats?

Treat yourself to one of these every week for the next three months.

Every week give yourself:

- A favourite childhood meal,
- A favourite movie,
- A favourite colour, and
- A favourite treat.
