Tips for Aspiring Vocalists

by Kirsten
(CA)

Young singers and aspiring vocalists often model after mainstream musicians for sound quality and tone, however, this is not the best way to be an efficient and healthy singer. In fact, it is more likely to cause more vocal problems. The best way to learn how to be a good singer, produce a good tone, and become an artist is to work closely with a professional.

Imitating performers that you hear on the radio is the least helpful way to learn to sing. Take lessons with a vocal instructor so that you can learn about your instrument and about music. Singing, no matter what style, is a physical activity and is most effective when you know how to use your body for healthy singing. Students will most often ask for help in making their voice more powerful. Increased power is a result of healthy singing. A teacher will not only give you an individualized plan for managing your breath and your breaks, improving your range, and giving more power to your voice, but will be able to give you immediate feedback on your progress.

I can say this because I learned firsthand that studying with a teacher is the quickest and most effective way to improve your voice. I had been singing on my own for 10 years, performing with groups and at churches, and I thought I had a decent voice. People would tell me my voice was sweet and pretty. I’m not bragging, trust me! After I got to college and started taking lessons, learning how my body works, and how to make my voice a musical instrument, it started improving after a semester! My teachers were gushing about how my voice was blossoming, I added a full octave to my upper range, I added richness to my lower range, and I finally felt confident in myself and my singing. I came back from college and surprised a lot of my old friends that had heard me before.

It was a very rewarding experience and I recommend taking lessons to anyone aspiring to be a singer. It prevents you from picking up bad vocal habits, allows you to sing with your true voice, and gives you a freedom and confidence that only comes with knowing you are successful.

I've had two vocal coaches in my lifetime and I agree with you 100% plus. Both coaches were wonderful to work with and provided great value to my success. It dramatically improved my vocal instrument and vocal performance. I'm hoping to continue the services of vocal coaches again in the near future. Thanks for your submission Kirsten.
